 Welcome to MA Education TEFL

The School of Education at the University of Birmingham, England has been involved in the study of Education for over 100 years and has an excellent reputation for TEFL.

We offer a TEFL programme that has an excellent worldwide reputation. If you are interested in getting an MA (Masters) qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, we would be interested in hearing from you.

The MA Education TEFL programme helps you to become a better English language teacher. The Masters course is designed to be both practical and to give you an introduction to necessary investigation and research tools. We believe that the best teachers are those who can reflect on and investigate practice. There are three core modules (Communicative Language Teaching, Second Language Acquisition and Language Discourse and Society). These MA modules give you a strong grounding in appropriate classroom methodology, course and materials design.

It can be confusing choosing the right programme for you. There are so many terms! (TEFL, TESOL, EFL, ESOL, ESL.) We believe that our distinctive Masters course has a number of strong features:

  • Outstanding reputation
  • Students of diverse backgrounds and ages
  • Friendly and social atmosphere
  • Excellent feedback
  • Strong practical and academic focus
  • Opportunities to visit local schools and observe teaching
  • Academic skills and language support throughout your study
  • Excellent dissertation support
  • A chance to be part of a vibrant community of teachers and researchers

All tutors teaching on the core modules of the MA Education TEFL programme are members of the Languages, Discourses and Society  (LDS) research group. This is a very active academic group (which is similar to a department in some ways) in the School of Education. LDS members  are involved in research projects concerning classroom interaction, second language learning and teaching, teacher collaboration, teacher development, bilingualism and multilingualism, literacy, academic discourse, gender and identity, digital literacies and learning through IT amongst many others. The group has a vibrant community of over 30 research students  (MPhil/EdD/PhD), researching a range of topics, such as bilingual education, second language motivation, second language learning in virtual environments, intercultural communication, complementary schools, dyslexia in education, and many others.

During the term (usually on Friday afternoons), LDS runs a Seminar Series during which both world renowned speakers and research students present their work. There is also an opportunity to learn about the staff and students’ work in progress at the LDS Research Day, organised annually at the end of June. As MA Education TEFL students, you are warmly invited to participate in LDS events and are encouraged to make the most of the invaluable opportunity to interact with leading researchers in the field.

All of this will make studying TEFL at the School of Education at the University of Birmingham, England, UK an exciting and rewarding experience.
