Profile

Graham Butt is a Reader in Geography Education and Director of Academic Planning (Deputy Head of School) of the School of Education. He has written and researched extensively on issues within geography education and has more recently focused on issues of teacher  workload, remodelling and modernisation. His recently published books include ‘Modernizing Schools’ (2007) (with Helen Gunter), ‘Lesson Planning’ (3rd Edition) (2008) and ‘Reflective Teaching of Geography 11-18’ (2002). One of his previous publications, ‘Birmingham – Decisions on Development’ (1998), was awarded a Silver Medal for Curriculum Materials by the Geographical Association (GA).

Graham is currently an Editor of the international journal Educational Review and has previously edited the ‘Assessment Matters’ section of Teaching Geography. He is currently Chair of the Geography Education Research Collective (GEReCo), a group of research active geography educationists based in English universities.

In addition Graham serves, or has served, as an external examiner for PGCE, Masters, MPhil and PhD students at a number of British universities and has worked in a consultant capacity for the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

Research and Projects Interests

Main research interests are centred around geography education, particularly the assessment of geography and the use of language in geography classrooms. Other research includes aspects of Initial Teacher Training and issues of teacher workload (linked to DfES funded research under the ‘Pathfinder: Transforming the School Workforce’ initiative).

Teaching Interests

Current teaching responsibilities include PGCE Geography students, Masters and PhD students.
