This overview provides information for practitioners interested in studying in the area of visual impairment and education at the University of Birmingham.

BPhil / PG Diploma – Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children with Visual Impairment (Distance Education)

This two-year programme is open to teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent, seeking the Mandatory Qualification (MQ) for specialist teachers of children with visual impairment.

BPhil / PG Diploma / MEd – Education of Children with Visual Impairment (Distance Education)

This two-year programme is open to teachers (as well as other professionals with appropriate qualifications) working with children and young people with visual impairment who are not seeking the MQ.

AdCert / PG Cert – Visual Impairment Further Education (Distance Education)

This one-year programme is open to professionals with a relevant teaching qualification (or equivalent) who are supporting students with a visual impairment in Further or Higher Education.

Research Degrees

Over the last three decades extensive research into the educational aspects of visual impairment has been conducted in the School of Education. The School of Education offers opportunities to teachers and other professionals concerned with the education of children and young people with visual impairment, to join a rich research environment by studying for the award of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
