Professional Learning and Pedagogy

Research in the Professional Learning and Pedagogy Group occurs in three areas: curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; multi-agency working, organizational learning and inter-professional working; and educational theory and policy analysis.

Dedicated Research Centres: CRMDE

Since 2001, members have been involved in 36 funded projects with an income of £3m. Published output since 2001 exceeds 200 books, journal articles and chapters and the group as over 60 currently registered research students.

Theme 1: Curriculum, pedagogy and assessment

Work is focused on pedagogical practice and its relationship with curriculum, assessment and management, particularly in primary and secondary education. Several projects deal with science education, geography, religious education and mathematics education.

Theme 2: Multi-agency working, organizational learning and inter-professional working

Projects enquire into teacher education and medical and dental education. Many projects are based in two of the School’s research centres: the Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education (CRMDE); and the Centre for Socio-cultural and Activity Theory Research (CSAT).

Theme 3: Educational theory and policy analysis

A focus of work in this theme is theory-generation and policy analysis. Engaging critically with contemporary policy and practice -locally, nationally and internationally – it relates analysis of pedagogy to curriculum, assessment and management.
