The Annual Birmingham Conference

Every year since 2001, CRMDE has co-hosted a national conference with the NHS West Midlands Workforce Deanery.  This year’s Birmingham Conference 2008, held on the 8th May at the Lakeside Centre Aston, attracted more delegates than ever.  Over 100 health professionals and academics with an interest in medical and dental education registered for the one-day event, which was sponsored by the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority.

The theme for this year’s programme was ‘Education, Professionalism and Outcomes’, and we were delighted that Professor Aly Rashid, Associate Director of the National Clinical Assessment Service launched the day with his keynote talk: ‘Can Lack of Professionalism be Compatible with a Successful Medical Career?’  In the second keynote entitled  ‘The Outcomes Model in Medical Education’, Professor David Wall, Deputy Postgraduate Dean in the West Midlands, argued that outcomes-based approaches have strengthened undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in clarifying what is required of the curriculum, the teaching as well as the assessment process.

The rest of the day offered parallel sessions, including four workshops and four short-presentation sessions, delivered by medical/dental educators and researchers from across the UK.  These focussed on topics of current interest including:  e-learning, user-involvement in medical education, medical and dental education curricula, consensus research methods, and career issues for junior doctors and dentists.

If you are interested in attending next year’s Birmingham Conference event, or submitting an Expression of Interest to present your work, the date for your diary is:  Thursday 21st May 2009.
