Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education (CRMDE)

The Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education (CRMDE) was established in 2000 as a partnership between the West Midlands Postgraduate Deanery and the School of Education, University of Birmingham.

The Centre’s Current Activity

Since the establishment of the Centre, work has been undertaken on a wide range of research projects, with about 12 current at any one time.  In this period, broad areas of enquiry have included:

  • Selection
  • Curriculum and assessment
  • Careers support
  • Continuing Professional Development
  • Multi-professional education and training
  • Systematic reviews

CRMDE is a partner in the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre, which was established in 2004 to provide a focal point for genetics education and training in the NHS.

Each year we co-host the Birmingham Conference. This is an educational conference for health care professionals hosted jointly with our partners, the West Midlands Workforce Deanery.  The theme for the 2007 conference was team working and patient safety.

We are now building on our research projects by developing teaching programmes. These include research methods courses for the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and the Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Professionals, led by the Schools of Education and Medicine, University of Birmingham.

Draft Guidelines for Dental Educators: Seeking Your Views

COPDEND have commissioned the University of Birmingham to outline a set of UK guidelines for educators of the post-registration dental team.  These include (for illustration): dental tutors; VT advisers and trainers; DCP tutors (nurses, technicians, therapists, hygienists); providers of 'training the trainers' programmes; consultant education supervisors and trainers.  The document, Guidelines for Dental Educators: a framework for educators of the dental team, downloadable as a pdf format, is intended to provide an overarching framework which can be used to establish good practice expectations related to different dental educator roles.

An on-line survey has been designed to seek dental educators’ views towards these guidelines.  This can be accessed direct from: http://www.survey.bris.ac.uk/bham/dentaleducators

The survey is simple to complete and your contribution will help shape the final guidelines.   Responses can be received until 20 June 2008.  If you have any questions about this work, please contact Dr Alison Bullock, CRMDE, University of Birmingham Tel: 0121 414 4380; Email: a.d.bullock@bham.ac.uk

A paper based version is available on request from Alison Bullock.

Do please spare a few minutes to give us your views.
