Core staff administer the Centre and also run the international programmes International Management and Policy and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (Masters and BPhil level). The team currently has research and consultancy work in Afghanistan, Angola, Dubai, Korea, Liberia, the Solomon Islands and South Africa. Staff between them speak French, German, Spanish, Bahasa Indonesia and Krio.
Dr Michele Schweisfurth (Director)
Dr Michele Schweisfurth has a wide range of experience of working in education institutions in different national contexts, from primary schools to universities, and including work with out-of-school groups such as adults and prisoners. Her research interests within Comparative and International Education are democratic education, global citizenship and intercultural education, and the professional identity of teachers. Current projects include a comparative study of the intercultural experiences of international students in the UK (ESRC). A Canadian national, she has also lived and taught in Sierra Leone, Indonesia, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and recent research projects have provided experience of The Gambia, Rwanda, Russia, and South Africa.

Professor Clive Harber
Professor Clive Harber is Professor of International Education at the University of Birmingham. Between 1995 and 1999 he was on leave of absence from the University of Birmingham as Professor of Education and Head of the Department of Education at the University of Natal, South Africa. He taught politics and social sciences in schools in the UK and Nigeria before joining Birmingham University in 1980. He now teaches on Masters courses and supervises research in the field of International Educational Management and Policy. His own research interests lie in the relationships between politics, education and development. In particular he is interested in the role of education in democratisation and the creation of cultures and systems of peaceful conflict resolution and he has published widely in these areas.

Professor Lynn Davies
PhD, M.Ed, BA (Hons), PGCE, LRAM
Professor Lynn Davies is Professor of International Education and CIER Research and Consultancy Manager. Her major teaching, research and consultancy interests are in educational management internationally, particularly concerning democracy, citizenship, gender and human rights. A specific interest is in education and security, and how education contributes to conflict or to peace and civil renewal. She has experience in Angola, Kosovo, Bosnia, Palestine, Malawi and the Gambia. She chairs the UNESCO Associated Schools network, and is on the Board of Trustees of UNICEF.

Dr Chris Williams
Dr Chris Williams is a lecturer in international education and has also held posts at the universities of London, Cambridge, Cairo, and the United Nations, Jordan. He was ESRC Fellow at the Global Security Programme, Cambridge, and Rowntree Fellow at the Norah Fry Research Centre, Bristol. His engagement in global justice includes: street-working children in South Africa, Turkey, and Afghanistan; disability rights in Britain, Egypt, China, Thailand and Japan; environmental victims in India; cultural diversity in Korea; and Education For All in Lebanon, Palestine and Liberia.

Dr Steve Mann
Dr Steve Mann is a Lecturer in TEFL and Education. He has taught and managed English language programmes in a range of institutions and companies in UK, Europe, Hong Kong and Japan. He is particularly interested in supporting teaching development for TEFL teachers. His published journal articles mostly concern the support and design of action research projects and teacher support projects. His recently published State-of-the-Art article for Language Teaching provides a comprehensive overview of teacher development research. Recent research grants from ILT and HEFCE both provide an ethnographic study of teacher support groups.

Hiromi Yamashita
Hiromi Yamashita is a Research Associate whose interests include issues of social justice, young people's participation, global citizenship, sustainable development and education in coastal regions. Originally a teacher in Japan, she has expertise in qualitative research in a range of settings and project management in the area of International Education. At CIER she has conducted research into 'Global Citizenship Education: The Needs of Teachers and the Learners' (DFID); 'Impact of Pupil Participation in Decision Making' (Carnegie Foundation); 'London Secondary School Council Action Research Project' (School Councils UK), and has worked on curriculum development for the College for International Citizenship (CIC).

Sue Gallagher (Centre Administrator)
Sue Gallagher is the CIER administrator. As well as supporting students, she has a wide range of experience in supporting research and training, and has administered projects for UNESCO, DFID, the Home Office and the INTREC Consortium.
