About Acer

The Autism Centre for Education and Research is housed within the School of Education at the University of Birmingham.

The School has a national and international record of high quality teaching and research on the autism spectrum.

Created in 2007, ACER has two main aims:

  • To attract and develop research initiatives on education and support for people on the autism spectrum.
  • To provide programmes of study which have been designed to meet the needs of those on the autism spectrum, as well as practitioners, providers and parents

We believe the link between research and teaching is crucial. As such, real people in real situations are at the very heart of our research. Evidence-based findings help to inform our teaching and, we hope, improve the quality of life for those with autism.

Active as researchers, authors and lecturers, team members include Dr Karen Guldberg, Dr Glenys Jones, Andrea McLeod, Dr Sarah Parsons, Dr Mitzi Waltz and Dr Kerstin Wittemeyer (from September 2009)
