Initial Teacher Education

The PGCE courses at the University are of high quality as evidenced by external and internal quality assurance systems. The courses are well established, very popular and have excellent retention and employment rates.


The University of Birmingham has been at the forefront of the development of Level M PGCE courses.

The Primary PGCE consistently features as one of the top ten primary courses in tables formed by data gathered from the TDA Performance Profiles.


PGCE programmes are available for full-time study (normally of one year duration) in the following areas:

Primary Courses are available (2008/09) for:

  • Early Years, preparing you for teaching in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (3 to 7 year-olds) and
  • General Primary, preparing for teaching in Key Stages 1 and 2 (5 to 11 year-olds).
