Autism Centre for Education and Research (ACER)

This research centre, which sits within a framework of research within the School on disability, diversity and inclusion, focuses on research and teaching on education and care for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

The team is internationally recognised, being involved in national and international forums for policy, practice and research. Research includes fundamental factors affecting teaching and learning, social inclusion, evaluation of interventions, support in further and higher education, professional attitudes and knowledge, the effects of policy and practice on individuals and families, training methods (including e-learning), and the use of innovatory techniques (e.g. virtual and augmentative reality).

Current academic staff involved are Professor Rita Jordan, who leads the team, with colleagues Dr Glenys Jones, Karen Guldberg, Andrea MacLeod and Lynn Plimley.

The centre has links with other research centres in autism spectrum disorders nationally and internationally including:

  • Action for Autism, New Delhi
  • Autism Research Alliance Australasia
  • Autism Research Centre, Hungary
  • Flemish Belgian Training centre for Autism
  • Robotics Institute, University of Valencia
