Visual Impairment: Mandatory and non-mandatory qualification for Teachers of Children with a Visual Impairment

Programme aims

To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable teachers to work confidently and effectively in a variety of educational settings with children who have visual impairment, with their families and with the professionals who support them;

To develop critical and analytical problem-based learning skills to enable teachers to work in the range of contexts where children with visual impairment are educated;

To provide a conceptual framework that is derived from relevant literature and research and structured around the TTA National SEN Specialist Standards for the Mandatory Qualification (MQ) in visual impairment.

Programme content

The programme is divided into the following components:

  • Six modules of 20 credits
  • Braille
  • Teaching Placement

Attendance is required at Residential Study Weekends and Regional Study Days.

Programme entry requirements

Students are required to have QTS and will normally be working with children and young people with a visual impairment on a regular basis. Teachers who are not working with pupils with a visual impairment may be required to undertake a negotiated programme of visits prior to commencing the programme.

Awards

On successful completion of the programme students will be awarded a BPhil or PG Diploma in Special Education: Visual Impairment. These awards are recognised by the General Teaching Council (GTC) as meeting the requirements for the mandatory qualification (MQ) for specialist teachers of the visually impaired. On successful completion of the PGDiploma students may transfer to the MEd programme.
