Programme aims

The programme aims to provide students with knowledge and skills relating to:

  • Current debates in history and their significance for the study of past childhoods and youth
  • source material for the study of childhood and youth; image-based research
  • the impact of race, class and gender in shaping the experiences of childhood and youth
  • the experiences of children and young people in the twentieth century
  • ethical issues in researching childhood.

Programme content

Students study the modules below and complete a dissertation.

  • The Child and Youth in History: New Perspectives and New Themes
  • Textual Representations of Children and Childhood, 1800-2000
  • Childhood and Youth in an Age of Domestic and Global Conflict
  • Childhood and Youth in the City: Race, Class, Gender and Life Experience

The programme is linked to a European funded project involving four universities. This project has developed a website for use on the programme.

Students are required to have achieved a good honours degree.

Awards

On successful completion of the programme students will be awarded a Master of Arts degree. The programme is also offered as an MPhil where students study three modules and complete an extended dissertation.
