Programme aims

The programme aims to equip teachers who are already qualified to teach school-aged children in England to meet the relevant TTA standards to achieve qualified teacher of the deaf status from the General Teaching Council for England. Applicants who are not qualified teachers of school-aged pupils may take the University award but will not be eligible to obtain qualified teacher of the deaf status from the GTC.

Programme content

The programme content includes the following modules:

• Language Acquisition in Deaf Children
• Educational Audiology
• Working with Families Who Have a Deaf Child
• Multi-Professional Work
• Approaches to the Education of Deaf Children and Young People

Curriculum

Practical work is given particular emphasis, and includes two periods of assessed teaching, an extensive programme of visits to schools and workshops in audiology and language assessment.

Candidates wishing to gain the GTC recognition as a qualified teacher of the deaf must already be qualified to teach school-aged children in England. Other candidates must meet the entry requirements for this award.

Fees*

1st Year - Hearing Impairment (mandatory qualification or non-mandatory qualification)

Fees for 1st year students commencing in 2008-09. Fees for subsequent years of study are likely to increase. An additional cost may be incurred for transferring between levels of study. These are indicative fees, to be confirmed. Students should confirm their fees upon being offered a place.

2nd Year - Hearing Impairment (mandatory qualification or non-mandatory qualification)
