Programme aims

The programme will aim to:

  • encourage students to reflect on and evaluate their own practice
  • enable students to observe and assess the cognitive abilities of learners who experience difficulties in acquiring effective literacy and/or numeracy skills
  • extend students' competence in preparing technical reports, for other professionals, setting out the needs of learners with dyslexia
  • promote students' ability to design, evaluate and implement effective programmes in relation to individual learning needs
  • develop students' critical awareness of the range of provision for learners with dyslexia
  • raise students' awareness of the legal and professional issues that affect learners with dyslexia

In addition, students will be able to extend their understanding and critical appraisal of current research in dyslexia and related areas. Those students who register for the MEd pathway will have the opportunity to extend the knowledge base that informs our understanding of dyslexia, through practitioner research.

Programme content

Postgraduate Certificate

This comprises two modules:

  • Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia): Identification, Assessment and Teaching
  • Special Study (Teaching Project)

Master of Education

The pathway comprises five modules plus a dissertation. Four of the modules are equivalent to those studied for the PGDip but, instead of studying Introduction to Speech/Language Difficulties, students registered for an MEd take a research module - Practitioner Inquiry in Education.

Dissertation Module

Students complete a dissertation comprising 15,000 words, describing and analysing a small-scale research project into some aspect of dyslexia, which they have conducted under supervision.

Programme entry requirements

Students who successfully complete the programme will be entitled to apply for Associate Membership of the British Dyslexia Association. Alternatively, students may decide to finish their studies after one year and collect a Postgraduate Certificate.
