The Birmingham Conference 2007

West Midlands Deanery iconThis was the annual educational conference for health care professionals hosted jointly by the West Midlands Workforce Deanery and the Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education, University of Birmingham

The scene was set by two keynotes, the first by Howard Arthur on ‘Effective Team Working in the NHA: To be or not to be?” and the second by Hywel Thomas on ‘Teamwork, patient safety and the new professionalism’.  Subsequent workshops and short communications were in three groups: dental education; hospital based practice; and general practice.

Birmingham Conference logoSessions on dental education drew from studies in England, Scotland and Wales and included four reports of studies on the role of the team in general dental practice and a study on the effect of computerised records on patient safety.  Research was also reported on the impact of training of UK and overseas trained dentists on quality as well as the effect of different modes of assessment and audit on the quality of care.

Presentations and discussions on hospital practice covered a wide range of issues having potential consequence for teams and for patient safety.  On hospital practice, studies included enquiries on the effect of the European Working Time Directive, the importance for systematic training on medical note taking, the quality of the educational environment in hospitals and the role of different members of teams in paediatrics and hospital based dental surgery.

On general practice, there were reports of studies on the vocational training scheme and the development of teams in primary care.  On genetics, a study on the place of genetics in primary care was reported and the value of patient views in informing the genetics education of health professionals was explored.  The importance of developing more training in evidence based medicine emphasised the importance of education for patient safety.

A broad range of workshops were offered.  These lively and informative sessions included activity on human error, safety climate assessment, generalizability theory, careers management and development of the dental practice team.

Information on next year’s conference will be available shortly.
