School of Education

Established in 1947 at the University of Birmingham, we are one of the largest schools of education in the UK with a distinguished reputation for excellence in our research and teaching practice both nationally and internationally.


Research, consultancy and knowledge transfer

With over 100 lecturing and research staff within the School of Education, many of whom internationally recognised authorities in their disciplines, our research contributes to academic, industry and media debates worldwide. We undertake projects in the School of Education, funded and commissioned by a range of organisations including schools, local authorities, charities, industry, research councils and UK and international government departments.

A number of highly successful research centres ensures that at the School of Education we continue to receive national and international acclaim – which includes a history of 5 star rated research and in the 2008 Research Excellence Exercise (RAE), 80 % of our work was recognised as being of international quality.

Many programmes in the School of Education, can be taken full- or part-time, with some having options for flexible distance learning. Many of our programmes are interdisciplinary and we strongly encourage research that crosses traditional education and subject boundaries.

On Friday 26 March, Mukul Saxena from the University of Warwick, will be discussing Ideology, Policy & Conflicting Classroom Discourse Patterns in a Postcolonial Multilingual State. Please see the research seminars page for further details.

Etienne Wenger is the keynote speaker at a one day Conference on Monday 10 May. The title of the Conference is Barriers and Enablers to Communities of Practice in Higher Education. Please view the the events page for more information.
